As professional providers of sports massage in Central London, we are often asked a number of questions by our clients. One of the most common queries that we receive is if sports massage is painful.
The truth is that sports massage will feel different for different people, depending on the specific condition or injury, their fitness level, and various other factors. It doesn’t have to hurt to be effective and you don’t have to be sore for a few days afterwards. If you do have a tight, overused or problematic area of your body, there is a chance that there may be some discomfort experienced but this is only in rare occasions. It is not our aim to make the massage hurt but to ensure that the desired effect is achieved. We will adjust our massage techniques to suit the needs of each unique client and ensure that they are comfortable with the massage they receive.
Muscles are designed to be in constant motion as they contract and stretch throughout the day. If a lot of time is spent at either end of the spectrum (either frequent gym visits to contract them or long periods of sitting to shorten them) it can cause muscles to become tight and reduce blood flow. When a treatment is sought, muscles that are tight do not move easily under a therapist’s pressure, potentially causing some discomfort. Even general mobility can cause pain if the muscles are too tight.
The aforementioned suggests that it isn’t actually the massage causing the pain but rather the routines that you follow in your daily life. We recommend that you spend a few days a week completing gentle muscle exercises or foam rolling. When this is used in conjunction with our sports massage and deep tissue massage in Wimbledon and Central London, you will be likely to see a lot of pain relief and improvement. The frequency of your massages depends on the level of activity but we do recommend at least once a month.
Sports massage is for everyone; you don’t have to be an elite athlete to benefit from it. In fact, we have assisted a huge variety of people with our treatments, including expectant and new mothers, people with chronic pain and those simply wishing to relieve tension and stress in their body and mind. Our techniques are versatile and can be used in a number of different ways to improve lifestyles.
